  • Childbirth Education: Classes & Books

    • Lamaze International
A leading name in childbirth education, Lamaze offers evidence-based information to help you Push for Your Baby!
    • Your Best Birth: Know All Your Options, Discover the Natural Choices, and Take Back the Birth Experience (Lake & Epstein, 2010)
An excellent book to read at the start of your pregnancy or if you're looking to make a change along the way.
    • Giving Birth With Confidence
A blog from Lamaze, aimed at expecting parents. One of my favorite pregnancy-related stops on the web.
    • The Birth Partner: A Complete Guide to Childbirth for Dads, Doulas, and All Other Labor Companions, 3rd Edition (Simkin, 2007)
One of the few quality books out there geared at the support team - whether it be dad, a partner, a friend or family member. If you're new to birth and want to learn how to best support a laboring woman, give this one a read.
    • Ina May's Guide to Childbirth (Gaskin, 2003)
Ina May is a legend in the birth world - and for good reason! Her guide to childbirth is an informative and easily-digestable read.
    • The Thinking Woman’s Guide to a Better Birth (Goer, 1999)
Though this book is over ten years old, the basic premises still hold true and it is a great guide to get you thinking critically about all of the options before you.
    • Birthing from Within: An Extraordinary Guide to Childbirth Preparation (England, 1998)
If you're looking for something a little more introspective, Birthing from Within is a great resource. Also a valuable tool for women trying to overcome a less than ideal past experience and to move forward in positive directions.
  • Breastfeeding Support

    • La Leche League International
The household name in breastfeeding support. LLL is a great place to get advice and help and to meet other new moms like yourself. The Orland Park chapter meets at Cutie Poops & Bottoms once/mo. If you're pregnant, consider attending prenatally.
    • Kelly Mom
My go-to site for everything breastfeeding-related. If you're dealing with an issue, she has a page full of information on it. Created and maintained by a board certified lactation consultant.
    • Find a Lactation Consultant
An internationally board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) is *the* expert. If you're having any trouble breastfeeding, please reach out and ask for help. It's worth it. (Also, contact your health insurance provider about coverage for IBCLCs.)
    • The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, 8th ed. (La Leche League, 2010)
An excellent (and updated!) guide from La Leche League. Informative and easy to read. I keep this one on my bedside table.
    • Breastfeeding Made Simple (Mohrbacher, Kendall-Tackett, 2010)
Another favorite breastfeeding how-to. Well-organized, easy to digest, and full of useful information.
    • Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding (Gaskin, 2009)
A great addition to the breastfeeding literature from Ina May. Informative and conversational in Ms. Gaskin's usual friendly style.
  • Babywearing & Cloth Diapering

    • The Babywearer
A ridiculously informative site on all things Babywearing. (Warning: Can be a bit overwhelming at first, but is well worth slogging through :))
    • The Diaper Pin
Great, informative site on all things cloth diapering. Includes glossaries of terms and descriptions of the various options out there.
    • Green Mountain Diapers
Good place to buy quality prefolds and other cloth diapering accessories. Also includes a decent amount of how-to and other information.
